1917 - This image shows the fresh new American troops arriving in Europe to save the Allies (British, French, and their colonial armies) from the Germans, Austro-Hungarians, and the Ottomans. Nearly all of them were young and eager to experience the Great War. I wonder if they had seen the statistics linked below?

November 11, 1918 - A representative of the newly formed German government, Mattias Erzberger, signed the temporary agreement to stop the fighting called the Armistice. This signing occurred in a railway car in the Compiegne Forrest. This document allowed the Great War to end in a "peace without victory" This railway car would be kept as a museum display & would be subsequently used by Hitler in WWII. After Hitler's invasion of France in 1940, he would make the French accept his terms of German occupation of France

Tolkien's Hobbits in the Dead Marshes - inspired by WWI battles in Belgium - Ypres
Having served in the British Army during the the Battle of the Somme and again in the trenches of Ypres in Belgium, it is suggested that Tolkien may have taken some inspiration for parts of his classic trilogy The Lord of the Rings from the "War to end all wars" commonly known as World War I. View the clip - at approx 2 min mark - Perhaps after viewing some of the real footage, you can see the correlation. Tolkien's life was spared by "Trench Fever" after being bitten by some type of a louse. He spent his time in the hospital writing possibly trying to process the horrors that he had witnessed. Interestingly enough, he was particularly affected by the scenes of animal carnage. Again, if you have read the books or seen the movies, you might follow where I'm coming from.
